Fllooding-Act of God
Floods are caused by a variety of factors, some obvious causes of floods are heavy rains, melting snow and ice and frequent storms within a short time duration. Flooding is sometimes caused by excessive rains in low-lying areas. In many countries flooding is seasonal and clearly man has no control over the seasons. Flooding often occurs in the coastal areas due to natural causes. The earth has seven oceans that cover almost three-fourths of its surface. Naturally, wind and other events caused ocean water to sometimes overflow. When this happens, flooding on the shores occurs. Flooding is therefore an act of nature not of mankind. One cannot blame mankind for forces over which he has no control .What mankind can do however is prepare for floods since he can predict when the flooding season will begin ; in so doing the losses in terms of lives and resources can be minimized

Dear Arleen,
ReplyDeleteA very thought provoking blog post. I do not however agree with some of your ideas. While I admit that rainfall contributes to flooding and that is an act of god, the common practice of humans to build homes and towns near rivers and other bodies of water (i.e., within natural floodplains) has contributed to the disastrous consequences of floods. Furthermore According to some scientists, the record floods of 1990 were caused by global warming, the theory that the earth’s atmosphere traps heat nears the earth, slowly warming the earth. Mankind continues to contribute to global warming. Additional mankind dumps garbage in the rivers and watercourses preventing the natural flow of water. Mankind must accept some of the blame for flooding and devises ways to manage the heavy rains which occur seasonally.
